AFC BOURNEMOUTH boss Andoni Iraola has revealed his side have been targeting a new club record for the past few weeks.

Cherries are closing in on setting a new record for points in a single Premier League campaign, with Iraola’s charges currently four points off the tally of 46 set by Eddie Howe’s side in the 2016/17 season.

Bournemouth are currently sat in 13th in the Premier League table, with 42 points from 32 games.

They travel to Aston Villa tomorrow afternoon (3pm) hoping to add further points to their total.

Asked if setting a new record was a target discussed in the dressing room, Iraola told the Daily Echo: “We've been talking about this these last two three weeks.

“Even before it was something that we had in our mind.

“I think it's not going to be easy because the games we have, they are difficult games.

“We have to be very good if we want to win the next games.

“But, it's something that we want to achieve.”

The season Cherries set their record points total, they also managed to finish ninth.

However, last season Brentford only managed a ninth-placed finished after accruing 59 points, highlighting the quality of the Premier League’s top-half.

“It's very difficult for me,” continued Iraola.

“I think the way I see more or less the season, I see 10 teams that when you start the season, you say these the top 10 are going to be these 10 teams and then the rest.

“And we are fighting to be the best from the other 10, with Wolves, with Fulham.

“We are there, trying to compete and try to make the gap smaller with these other teams. But we want to finish strong. But this is difficult because I think that there is a gap there.”
